HOW TO SET HEALTHY SCREEN TIME LIMITS FOR KIDS

Most parents know the feeling: the sun is shining, the weather is perfect, and yet our kids are glued to their phones or tablets inside. 

Many parents feel overwhelmed with managing their child´s screen time  and it can start feeling like a battle. In our “digital age” with tablets, smartphones, computers and TVs offering endless entertainment and other resources, it´s really easy for kids to spend HOURS daily in front of a device.

Unfortunately, too much screen time can have tons of negative effects on your child’s physical health, social skills and well-being.

That´s why it’s so important to find a balance between allowing our kids to get the benefits from technology and making sure that they don´t get lost in this big universe.

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME

Before diving right into strategies, it’s important to understand why controlling screen time is a so important. Excessive screen time has been linked to various issues, including:

 
  1. Physical Health Problems: Spending too much time on screens can lead to a sedentary lifestyle, contributing to obesity, poor posture, and eye strain. Children may also experience sleep problems due to the blue light emitted from screens, which can disrupt their sleep patterns.

  2. Mental Health Concerns: Overexposure to screens, especially social media, can contribute to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem in children. They might also develop attention problems, making it harder for them to focus on tasks that require extended concentration.

  3. Social Skill Development: Kids who spend too much time on screens may miss out on crucial face-to-face interactions, which are essential for developing strong social skills. They may struggle with communicating effectively in real-life situations and building meaningful relationships.

  4. Behavioral Issues: Excessive screen time can lead to irritability, aggression, and difficulty managing emotions. Kids might become overly dependent on screens for entertainment, leading to boredom and frustration when they’re not allowed to use their devices

SETTING REALISTIC SCREEN TIME LIMITS

The first step in managing your children’s screen time is setting clear, realistic limits that work for your family. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers some general guidelines:
  • For children under 18 months: Avoid screen time, except for video chatting.
  • For children aged 18 to 24 months: Introduce high-quality educational content and watch it with them to help them understand what they’re seeing.
  • For children aged 2 to 5 years: Limit screen time to one hour per day of high-quality programming, and co-view whenever possible.
  • For children aged 6 and older: Establish consistent limits on the amount of time spent on screens and ensure that it doesn’t interfere with sleep, physical activity, and other healthy behaviors

CREATING THE RIGHT RULES

However, these are just guidelines. It’s best to create rules for your family and your children.
Here’s how to start:
  1. Track Current Screen Time: Begin by tracking how much time your child spends on screens each day. (all types of screens TV, Laptop, Tablet…)  This will let you know where to make changes.

  2. Set Clear Rules: Once you know your child’s current screen time habits, make clear rules when screens can be used. For example, you might decide that screens are only allowed after homework is completed or that there are no screens during meals.

  3. Involve Your Kids in the Process

    This is 100% one of the most important things because Involving your children in setting screen time limits can help them feel more invested in the rules and once they understand why too much screen time is so bad for them, they’re going to be so much more open about the rules. Discuss why it’s important to limit screen time and ask for their input on setting realistic rules.. 

  4. Create a Family Media Plan: A family media plan is a great way to set your screen time rules and expectations. It should include limits on screen time, designated screen-free zones (like bedrooms or the dinner table), and guidelines for appropriate content. The AAP offers a customizable family media plan tool that you can use to get started.

 

MONITORING SCREEN TIME AND CONTENT

It’s not just about how much time your child spends on screens, but also what they’re watching or doing. 

  1. Check Content Ratings: Always check the ratings and reviews of apps, games, and shows before allowing your child to use them. Opt for age-appropriate, educational content whenever possible.

  2. Co-View and Co-Play: Whenever possible, watch shows or play games with your child. This allows you to discuss the content together and guide them toward making good choices.

  3. Encourage Educational Content: Encourage the use of educational apps and programs that promote learning. There are many apps designed to teach skills like math, reading, and problem-solving in a fun and engaging way.

  4. Regularly Review Usage: Review your child’s screen time usage to ensure they’re following the rules and guidelines you’ve set. This can help you make any necessary adjustments.

  5. Discuss Online Safety: If your child is old enough to use the internet, make sure they understand online safety. Teach them about the importance of privacy, recognizing inappropriate content, and the dangers of interacting with strangers online.

One of the most effective ways to reduce screen time is by offering alternatives. Here are some ideas to keep your kids entertained and active without relying on screens:

  1. Outdoor Play: Encourage your children to spend more time outdoors. Activities like biking, playing sports, hiking, or simply exploring nature can be great fun and help them stay active.

  2. Arts and Crafts: Set up a creative corner in your home where your kids can draw, paint, or craft. 

  3. Reading Time: Make reading a daily habit. Create a cozy reading nook and stock it with books.

  4. Board Games and Puzzles: Introduce your children to board games and puzzles. These activities are not only fun but also great for family bonding.

  5. Physical Activities: Enroll your kids in physical activities like swimming, dancing, or martial arts. 

  6. Social Interactions: Arrange playdates, family outings, or visits to grandparents. Face-to-face interactions are key for developing social skills and building relationships.

DEALING WITH SCREEN TIME RESISTANCE

It’s natural for children to resist screen time limits, especially if they’re used to unlimited access. Here are some strategies to help you manage this::

  1. Be Consistent: Consistency is key when enforcing screen time rules. Don’t make the mistake to set up that screen limit once and be shocked when you check it after months… 🙂

  2. Explain the Benefits: Help your child understand why screen time limits are important. Explain that reducing screen time can lead to better sleep, improved mood, and more time for fun activities.

  3. Use a Reward System: Implement a reward system where your child earns screen time or other rewards for completing chores, homework, or engaging in screen-free activities.

  4. Stay Calm and Patient: If your child becomes upset or defiant when screen time is restricted, stay calm and patient. It may take time for them to adjust to the new rules, but consistency and understanding will help them adapt.

CREATING SCREEN FREE ZONES AND TIMES

To help manage screen time effectively, make specific zones and times where screens are off-limits:

  1. Screen-Free Zones: Make certain rooms of you homes a screen-free zone (If you want your kids to feel extra involved let them make Screen free zone signs and they’ll take it more serious. Common examples for these zones are the bathroom, bedroom and dining room.

  2. Screen-Free Times: Set specific times of day when screens are not allowed. For example, you might have a screen-free hour before bedtime to help your child wind down. You could also implement screen-free times during meals or family activities.

  3. Use Technology to Your Advantage: Many devices have built-in parental controls that allow you to set screen time limits, block inappropriate content, and schedule screen-free times. Take advantage of these tools to help enforce your screen time rules. PS: make sure to check them at least once a week because a lot of kids find ways to “trick” the screen-limit tools)

  4. Be a Role Model: Children often mimic their parents’ behavior. If you want your kids to reduce their screen time, set a good example by limiting your own use of screens. Show them that there are a lot of enjoyable activities to do without technology and make sure you follow the rules too.

FIND THE RIGHT BALANCE

While it’s essential to manage screen time, it’s also important to recognize that technology plays a significant role in modern life. The goal isn’t to eliminate screens but to find a healthy balance.

  1. Educational Benefits: Technology can be a great tool for learning. Use screens to introduce your children to educational content, such as online courses, documentaries, or interactive learning apps.

  2. Communication: Screens can help your children stay connected with family and friends, especially if they live far away. Video calls and messaging apps can be a valuable way to maintain relationships.


By using these strategies, you can take control of your children’s screen time and get to  a more balanced, healthy lifestyle. 

Remember, the goal is not to ban screens entirely, but to guide your children towards making better choices.
